1/13/06 - looby booby

12:59 PM - looby booby
Current mood: silly

I am dorky enough to receive the A Word A Day email, but I'm not quite nerdy enough to read each entry.

This one caught my eye. I would have called such a person a "booby," but "looby" is pretty thrilling as it is, especially given its close relation to another favorite word of mine, "bumpkin."

This week's theme: words to describe people.

looby (LOO-bee) noun

An awkward, clumsy, lazy fellow.

[From Middle English loby, from lob (bumpkin).]

"Who could give the looby such airs?"
Jonathan Swift; A Dialogue Between Tom and Robin; 1730.
