3/6/06 - farewell, old friend

March 6, 2006 - Monday

9:16 PM - farewell, old friend.
Current mood: depressed

Canon Powershot A60, you've been with me through the most amazing adventures. Remember your days in Costa Rica, getting crazy at Bulevar Bar by night, snapping photos of monkeys by day? Laryssa & Christine graced us with their presence in a series of Orlando photos--once when they threw you not-so-gently to the sidewalk, you were up and at 'em within seconds, no worse for the wear.

Eventually you acquired a passion for slaps: without my hitting you on the backside before each photo session, your screen flickered and flaked out again and again. Always, always, you came through. New Year's Eve parties, Pittsburgh family reunions, Kate's wedding (and that annoying guy who procured you sans permission and took loads of crappy pictures because he didn't know how to adjust your settings correctly), trips to New York, and vacations to sunny California. How we documented AmeriCorps reunions! How we sent evidence to our friends of the existence of Count de Hoernle Student Village, proving to all that it was not merely a figment of our terrorized imaginations!

O! Camera! You did one thing, one thing you weren't supposed to do: you died shortly before Valentine's Day. And unlike the last time you were laid to rest for two months and then miraculously sprang back to life, this time you are gone for good. I looked up information online and tried to revive you. Sobbing, sobbing, I held your beating heart in my hand as you repeatedly pushed your lens out...and right back in, your faint screen barely illuminated with the following: E18. E18. E18.

Internet tricks did you no good--I spent an hour on a cheesy techie site trying to twist you and hit you back into shape, but you weren't able to revive yourself.

Never forget the Daniel Byrd bizarro we found in Heredia, the man who looked just like Daniel but with dreads. Remember when Rachel climbed into a taxi with rich, nasty American men who were on their way to brothels poorly masked as casinos? Remember how you taped the Caribbean waves beating upon the black beaches as all the Rastafarian men smoked on the shore?

Goodbye, dismantled camera. R.I.P.
