I'm applying for the best job ever!

It's my birthday, by the way.

I finally finished my video application for the Best Job in the World. Video applications are due 2/22, so of course I finished mine 2/21. You'd be amazed--simply amazed!--at the amount of crap I got done today, crap I've had to do for weeks. Funny what a month-long trip away from home will inspire a girl to do. I mailed a ton of letters, sent off boring paperwork, took care of my taxes (read: mailed all forms to an accountant), did Addieville duties, picked up some Argentine pesos, tidied the house, and more, more, more!

Plus I went out for an hour this evening to celebrate Baby Neighb's birthday. And I watched a movie and did this video! Life is good. Hope I'm not too sleepy when I wake up all too early tomorrow.

Watch the video, but don't write evil comments or give me less than 5 stars. 'Cause then, you know, I'd be sad--and a girl shouldn't be sad on her birthday.

some favorite photos (summer 2006)

taken in Toronto

taken in Toronto

Just one of many gorgeous spots on the Islands in Toronto

My grandfather's name was Herbert Geddis, and he was a fireman. I was
delighted to find a fire station on Herbert Av. in Toronto!

The Tilt-a-Whirl at Erieview (or "Pera's") Park in Geneva-on-the-Lake, Ohio. A few
months after this was taken, the longtime amusement park was dismantled and is now no longer.

Here are some photos from summer 2006 that I shot. I have recently tried to get back into photography a bit, and I'm succeeding! I want some fancy lenses and such that will fit my digital SLR. When I bought my digital SLR a year ago, I was under the impression that my rather large collection of lenses and accessories (given to me by my grandfather) would fit the body of the new digital. Wrong impression. It seems there's no adapter to get these lenses to fit on any camera made in the last ten years, so I'm pretty disappointed.

The need for this statement won't ever arise, I'm sure, but here it is anyway: Please do not repost, reprint, or share the photographs on this site without express written permission from Janet Geddis. Thank you.

baby neighb

I just got in after a day o' fun with my dear friend A., a girl who just so happens to live two doors away! How convenient to find your neighbor funny, smart, and quite companionable!

Before I got a chance to hang out with A., we exchanged many messages posted to each other's doors. With each note we upped the ante a bit, always saying in one way or another that we should hang out soon. At last we got a chance to have a date, and ever since then we've been going strong. I'm very grateful to have her around!

Though more artistically talented than I, we share a knack for creating little homemade gifts and greetings. Imagine the happy snippets of delight I experience when I find a felt flower accompanied by a little note that says, "Happy spring!" or a little greeting card on my windshield when I walk out to my car to drive around and do errands.

Here are but two photos of greetings A. (or "Baby Neighb," as I and only I am allowed to call her--my rule) has left for me to discover.

For Halloween this year, she made little cupcakes; for Thanksgiving, a hand turkey with google eyes. It's my (well-researched) belief that engaging in little creative activities now and then keeps up your spirits, lets you relax, and causes you to feel more at ease with your life. Listen to me, guys: I have a Master's degree in this.

that time R.E.M. played a private show for me and I didn't show up

I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS! My dear Brandi posted a couple of Blogotheque videos on her awesome blog, and in my monthly review of her writing, I stumbled across this one of R.E.M. playing in Athens.

Playing behind my house.
Literally behind my house. Maybe fifty feet from my porch. WHY DID I NOT KNOW THIS WAS HAPPENING? True the shows aren't publicized. True Michael Stipe doesn't know we're friends (even though we are, of course). Oh I'm sad. But also excited. I mean, R.E.M. played a show next to my house.

See it here. Now if Sweet and Sarah Beth could cry with me for a minute, I'd feel better.

$2 Radio & Vroman's Bookstore

When I went to the Book Expo America this past May, I was thrilled to see some old friends (Eliza, Eric, Alissa!) and really happy to meet a new one (Patrick Brown of Vroman's Bookstore in Pasadena, CA). Imagine my surprise and delight to have stumbled upon this blog entry, written by Patrick for the Vroman's site, starring Eliza & Eric of $2 Radio!

Independent publishing houses are able to publish works that you might not ordinarily come across while browsing through Barnes & Noble's bestseller displays; independent bookstores are inspirational and inspired places where you can find all sorts of reading material to feed your brain.

I am so excited to be a part of all this in my own small way--perhaps this time next year I'll be ready to say that I've assumed an even bigger role!

kwotable kidz

I babysit for three smart, funny, and--let's face it--adorable children. They have all been known to say pretty hilarious, ingenious things, and once in awhile I write these things down.

  1. While playing an imaginary war game, B. (who was 7 at the time), said to his enemy, "Well, I'm not listening to the devil! I'm listening to God and Jesus. Or whatever their names are."
  2. P., who has been highly quotable from a young age, tends to create various accents during every game he plays. Once last year when he was 4, he stood on the couch and said to me very earnestly, "Davy Crockett. He had a wolf hat, cut up clothes, and bare feet." This was delivered in a country accent (with gestures) as the introduction to a Davy Crockett game he'd just thought up.
  3. E. (3-year-old girl) who is potty trained but still needs help, thought it was hilarious that her underwear was on the bathroom floor next to the tub while she sat on the toilet to pee this afternoon. "You left my underwear on the floor! The bathtub will be laughing and crying about that." She then erupted in a cascade of giggles.
  4. P. has a flair for the dramatic, as I mentioned above. He sometimes gets very apocalyptic and serious. Here he's playing the superhero-gone-bad game he likes so much, explaining why he, the bad guy, ended up in such a rough place. "The devil turned us evil until the devil died and we killed God!"
  5. While playing Wild West shortly after his fifth birthday, my character told P.'s character I was proud of him for surviving in the desert. His accented response? "There's no proud here. This is the Wild West." During that same game I offered him a glass of milk. He refused me and then said, "We don't like milk. We like blood."
  6. During a tour of the nonexistent family graveyard, one of P.'s self-created characters took me around to the tombstones to tell me about each family member buried there. "This is my grandpa. And my little brother, Tommy. And my mom, and my grandma, and my great-grandma. [beat] And I love this guy the best: God and Jesus."
  7. During that same game, I asked him how his [imaginary] grandpa died. "He died in the war and got killed by an evil troll with an axe."
  8. P.'s friend R. was over to play one day. R. has the adorably high-pitched voice of many five-year-olds. (I'm not being facetious here--she really is cute.) She was playing with some dolls and didn't want P. to play with her, since he said he didn't like dolls. Eventually he reneged and approached her with, "Can I play?" She reluctantly acquiesced. "Okay...but you have to be a mother." P. considered this and said, "...Or a dolphin?" "Okay!"
  9. Nearly three years ago, 6-year-old B. inspected 3-year-old brother P.'s class picture and had a very important question he couldn't wait to ask. "P.? P.? P.? P.! P.?" "Yeah?" "Who's this Asian-colored kid?"

my favorite new show: PUSHING DAISIES

I love this show. Just love it. The plot is charming, the acting is amazing, the characters are believable and flawed and adorable. Please watch it. Wednesdays at 8PM on ABC for you cable subscribers; online here at abc.com for you internet-savvy folks. At this point, all the episodes aired thus far are available online for FREE! (You can also buy them on iTunes for a pretty cheap fee if you're so moved, or if they've taken them off the abc.com site by the time you're reading this and you want to watch.)

Oh, it's gorgeously done. For fans of Amelie and Wonderfalls and Dead Like Me. Read Tim Goodman's review of it here.

10/14/06 0 my 15-year-old style weekend night activity

October 14, 2006 - Saturday

11:05 PM - my 15-year-old style weekend night activity

In early high school, I used to be stuck inside on some weekend nights, not having much to do if I didn't get a chance to sleep over at Kate Rauscher's house. And if I'd had myspace.com then (if we'd even had regular internet access then, kids!), I probably would have filled out a survey such as this...

(As it turns out, though, I'm just EXHAUSTED. And, like last night, I'll most likely turn in before midnight. Funny what working jobs starting early in the morning combined with lifting of heavy tables and such will do to a girl...)

Come on, you know you want to fill this out! I don't even care if you skip the ones you don't like. :)

1. Full name? Janet Evelyn Geddis
2. Were you named after anyone? First name: Aunt Janet; Middle: Grandma Geddis & Aunt Evie
3. Do you wish on stars? often
4. When did you last cry? a few tears during Grey's Anatomy, and then two days before in a middle of the night "discussion" with a friend, one that was healed shortly thereafter. Whew.

12. If you're alone in a room with two beds, which one do you sleep on? The one closest to a window

22. What's your favorite pair of pajamas like? favorite? I don't know that I have one.
23. Have you ever seen a shooting star? Yes, just earlier tonight the first moment I looked up at the sky--and a few minutes ago on the phone I told Jim about it, so you know it's true!

49. Favorite Movie Endings? oh, the finales where there's some predictable overcoming-of-seemingly-insurmountable odds and there's an audience present and everyone begins to clap and cheer and the underdog finally has his day? Those tearjerkers get me almost every time. But they're not my favorites. I don't think I have favorites.
50. Summer or Winter? summa summa summatime. And the seasons don't need to be capitalized.
51. Hugs or Kisses? I'm into the cuddling and hugging with a hint o' smooch.

These things are fun. I've learned a lot about my li'l Geddis from this. Hell no I'm not gonna do it myself though. Cause I don't want to. But I liked reading it. So.

8/8/06 - night of the blue donkey

August 8, 2006 - Tuesday

12:22 PM - night of the blue donkey
Current mood: proud

Last night, I went to Edwyna'sart show at the Flicker Bar, my newest home away from home. She has spent the better part of the last several ______ [insert accurate measurement to highlight how much of her recent life has been completely occupied by this project] creating this beautiful blue donkey paintings. Click on the link for a thorough description of what she's doing with the proceeds from this artwork.

What's really amazing is...wow. Ha. I was about to say one thing as if there's just one amazing thing about her undertaking, when really there is an inexhaustible list. I showed up to Flicker at 7:04, just minutes after the official art opening had kicked off. Jim was tending bar and told me that I'd better hurry, that the paintings were going fast. I looked to the wall and realized that he (and the dream I'd had that day, a dream in which I'd showed up early and all the paintings had been sold before the show'd even begun) spoke the truth--several paintings already had neon orange post-it notes next to them, denoting the fact that they'd been claimed by loyal fans. My immediate favorite, one of a donkey peeking around the corner of a frame soaked in orange, was taken. Another one that immediately caught my eye was one in which the blues were gorgeously saturated and a donkey's face was at the forefront--also taken (by Jim, of all people). Alas. But my painting is really quite charming, and definitely one of my favorites of all the forty that were on display last night. You'll have to see it later, my friends, or else go to Flicker with me and buy me a beer so I can point out to you the adorable square painting where my blue ass stares out from a field under a cloud-spotted sky.

Edwyna sold out in about an hour to a chorus of excited, smiley cheers and happiness. She was especially entertaining to watch in her blue dress as she rushed around--the disappointment of not getting to talk to the utterly busy woman was balanced by the fact that we were treated to watching her stuff wads of cash between her breasts as she got paid. Ha! Woohoooooo, Edwyna!!

Go vote today, Athens. If one lady can work this hard for the Democratic party, we can step out of our homes and take a few minutes to punch a few dots at a voting booth in this insufferable heat.

One month of painting and another week to prepare them for display. That is what goes in the blank.

This morning,
I took the kid to school, drove out to a farm to take care of a friend's pet rats, then went by the school to VOTE.I like activity at the school on voting day so the kids sense something special happening. That is why I don't go the the Board of Elections. However, I am grateful we all have the opportunity to vote early there.

I am so happy you like your painting. Thanks for not being too disappointed in not getting your first choice. Thanks for buying one. If they had not sold out, I certainly would not consider painting any more. So your purchase has given a few other people the opportunity to own a blue donkey as well.I couldn't look into people's faces and tell them that was IT. So there will be 25 more for $25. But THEN that is IT. I will need to get paid after that. AND I am always available for commissions, just to let you and everybody else know.

6/30/06 - summer, summer, summertime (summertime)

June 30, 2006 - Friday

12:18 AM - summer, summer, summertime (summertime)

...we'll just sit back & unwind.

Ah, the glory of Will Smith...

I am tempted to wax self-consciously poetic about how the last month or so (from the night before the road trip with Tamara onward) has been a remarkably emotional time for me, but then I'm forced to push back the time frame and see that things began before that. Maybe that afternoon I sat teary-eyed outside of the Coffee Bean in L.A. by myself after having finished my last-ever exam with no one to celebrate with was when this gently sloping rollercoaster ride began. But no: rewind to before that, and before that, and before that. If I so choose, I can divide my life into little vignettes and chapters according to events or themes or music I was listening to at the time or whatever suits my fancy.

What's most striking about my life is that it's forever shifting and surprising me. Maybe some find the day to day predictability of routine comforting, but to me that smacks of monotomy and boredom. Each day I can't imagine how years or even months ago I lived without the newer friends that I currently consider so important. Some friends outside of my Athens circle get the impression that I'm somewhat of a party girl; it's true that I often talk about who I know and what we did and what get-togethers we all attended. But what those people fail to understand about my life here is the intensity of the connections I feel with my Athenian peers. The community here is so creative, so vibrant. I fear that many residents often take it for granted. Sometimes I use the excuse that I'm a scholar in the field of creativity and that's the reason I am so prone to expressing my appreciation for the nurturing creative enclave we have here--but even if I had not pursued creative studies I would still pick up on this amazing vibe. It's true that it can get gossipy and that I have become caught up in that cycle here and there, but it's also true that my closest friends and I are more apt to be open-minded and give people a chance than to listen to a story someone heard about someone who knew someone who knew someone from college six years ago and believe it. Tangent, tangent--let me refocus here.

Once in awhile I tell people that I wish I had some sort of musical gift. Though it'd be cool to be able to pick up an instrument and play something even vaguely recognizable or be able to sing a song without feeling cripplingly self-conscious, the term "wish" makes it seem that I am simply dying to fit in with the musicians in this town. Not true. I don't know why I use that word--truth is, I am at ease being a listener; I just need to become more and more comfortable admitting that I don't know too much about the technical aspects of the music and what goes into making it.

I need to get off my butt and start pursuing the art projects I've let lie dormant for the past few months. At first, school work was my excuse. Since summer began, excessive travel and houseguests were the reasons I couldn't start my stuff. When I get back from this particular trip, I vow to start doing something!! I need to not put pressure on myself to come up with some product that others will like. After all, as a student of creativity, I have come to the realization that it's the process that matters most. (ha-had to throw that student thing in there again...)

Now I write and wonder why I ended up at a point I wasn't aiming for; I begin to scold myself for not having the neat bookends to this cheesy personal essay approach that I "should" have. But who cares? It's a blog. Got my words out. Declared a goal for myself. Declared my love of Athens once again. Guess I didn't actually have a goal to start with and ended up just fine--sort of how I live my life anyway, and look how rich my life is and always has been.

If the excitement of the current chapter isn't resurrected in some form when I get back, I'll deal with it just fine. In a life full of starts and stops that merge into one another, it'd really surprise me if the fall held in store more of the same type of bittersweet experiences that the early summer has so far. Some people whom I love more than anyone else in this world (true statement) are having their hearts torn and bruised while others are learning to open up to people despite this ultimate painful possibility.

Love,
Janet

P.S. If you made it through this, thanks a lot. I mean that. If you skimmed to the end and got this p.s., that's fine too, of course. I doubt I would have looked through it all.

Janeta mia, I love it when blogs and other "personal essay" type things spin out of control and become true. I'm having a summer, and a late night in particular, of strange deep and uncomfortable emotions. It felt good to read your words. Even if what hurts is also what sees and breathes, and so won't heal quite yet.

1/22/06 - the joy of small things

January 22, 2006 - Sunday

3:48 PM - the joy of small things

Last year, I smiled when I found out that a key characteristic of highly creative people is that they tend to have a lot of collections, especially collections of things that others don't see a purpose for.

I think of how repetitive drug users feel as if an itch has been scratched when they get a hit of whatever it is they're addicted to; my guess is that I could liken the feeling to the relief I experience when I have a first sip of PBR after a tough day full of beer craving. Just now I purchased lots of stamps at usps.com, stamps that are now unavailable at the two post offices I frequent here in Athens. As soon as I clicked "purchase," I felt that rush of relief--the itch had been scratched.

This weekend, Crackbaby and I joked quite a lot about how I am the queen of collections of crap. Sometimes she has an idea for a little project or present for someone: "I wish I could make a magnet for him," she'll say, and I'll inform her that I have several sheets of magnets (sparkly or white!) onto which we can print anything and everything. On Friday, she wanted a box to send to her boyfriend. "Oh, let's check my box collection before you go out and buy something!" I said eagerly--of course she started laughing immediately. This morning at Big City Bread, I told her with what joy I realized my cardboard and bag collections were far more extensive than I had thought (what a little reorganization of a messy office can do).

Oftentimes, I don't even use what I have in my collections. I do like to take out all my markers, put them in order of color, arrange them in some appealing order, and shut the drawer. I've been doing this for as long as I can remember. As messy as I am (and as horribly, incurably messy I was when younger), I love to organize things. I always know where things are, even if people see my house as chaotic. There's something calming about sifting through my sticker collections and finding the perfect thing to put on an envelope for a friend, something exciting about looking through my envelope collection and stumbling across the appropriately-sized envelope for mailing a mix CD.

My current collections include the following:
box collection (one here, one in FL--I kid you not. My mom laughs at me.)
cardboard collection
office supplies collection (a few drawers full of the stuff)
yarn collection
bead collection
CD collection
materials/odds and ends for crafts collection
bag collection (gift & travel bags)
stamp collection (to use, not to marvel over)
sticker collection
envelope collection
stationery collection
magnet collection (though I usually don't display them all)
